When we stress, physically, mentally or emotionally, our body releases a substance called cortisol aka ‘the stress hormone’ into our bloodstream.
Cortisol assists in the management of our body’s functions and processes, including regulating our blood pressure and helping the body break down our macronutrients, proteins, carbohydrates and fats. Cortisol itself is produced and released by the adrenal glands, the amount released is regulated by the pituitary gland, which is a tiny little gland at the base of our brain that sends signals to open or close the cortisol flood-gates. The stress hormone affects the digestive system, the immune system, growth processes and the reproductive system by releasing glucose into the blood.
Overtime, continuous stresses on the body result in continuous high cortisol levels and can lead to obesity, illness, digestive and metabolic issues.
High cortisol levels are indicated by:
- Weight gain
- Thinning of the skin making it harder to heal
- Mood swings
- Facial hair and irregular periods in woman
- Poor memory
- Low immunity
- Muscle aches and pains
- Excessive thirst
